PGY-2 CRITICAL CARE PHARMACY RESIDENCY


PROGRAM FUNDAMENTALS

  • The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency builds on PGY1 and Doctor of Pharmacy education. The program provides residents with ample learning opportunities in various critical care areas.
  • Upon completion of the PGY2 program, residents are qualified to obtain a position in most critical care areas as a clinical pharmacy specialist, clinical faculty, or continuation of training in a fellowship program.

RESIDENCY HIGHLIGHTS

Positions: 2

Duration: 12 months

Rotations: 5 required, 3 electives

Estimated Stipend: $60,320 per year (no FICA or state income tax)

RESIDENT REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nevada Pharmacist License recommended prior to the first day of residency
  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency
  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy
RESIDENCY APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • 3 letters of recommendation (1 must be from PGY1 Residency Program Director)
PGY-2 Critical Care Residency interviews: Candidates will be asked to give a 15 minute presentation on a critical care topic. Slides should be emailed to program director one week prior to interview date.

  • Neonatal intensive care unit
  • Pediatric intensive care unit  
  • Trauma with burn intensive care unit focus
  • Repeat of any required rotations

  • Antimicrobial Stewardship
  • Medication use evaluations
  • Pain Consults
  • Parenteral Nutrition Consults
  • Precepting (while on rotations)
  • Teaching certificate (optional)

PROJECTS

  • 1 Research project
  • 1 Drug protocol
  • 1 UMC Newsletter Article

 

PRESENTATIONS

  • 2 Pharmacy conference presentations
  • 2 Journal clubs
  • 4 Medical resident/fellow presentations  
  • 2 Continuing education presentations
  • A regional residency conference platform presentation

 

STAFFING

  • Antimicrobial stewardship every other Sunday
  • 26 shifts (10 hour shifts)
    • 260 non-holiday hours
    • 1 major holiday
    • 1 minor holiday
  • Clinical call
    • Clinical call includes responsibilities of updating antimicrobial stewardship reports, assigning MUEs and clinical consults to co-residents and clinical pharmacists, and answering phone calls regarding consults.
    • Will occur for 1 week approximately every 6 weeks
    • Includes weekends; does not count toward staffing shifts
  • Additional staffing is optional for supplemental pay
