Living Donor Criteria

The following are criteria for selection for renal transplant candidates:

• Minimum 18 years of age
• History of uncontrolled hypertension (blood pressure must be less than 140/90 and currently on blood pressure medication
• History of diabetes mellitus
• History of kidney disease
• History of active infectious disease
• Patient is not pregnant and does not plan to become pregnant within one yea
• History of coronary artery disease
• Body Mass Index < 30.
• History of current use of illicit drugs such as heroin, cocaine, marijuana
• Proper caregiver/support person for the living donor candidate

Absolute Exclusion Criteria:

• Mentally incapable of making an informed decision
• HIV, unless the requirements for a variance are met, according to Policy 15.7: Open Variance for the Recovery and Transplantation of Organs from HIV Positive Donors
• Active malignancy, or incompletely treated malignancy
• High suspicion of donor coercion
• High suspicion of illegal financial exchange between donor and recipient
• Evidence of acute symptomatic infection (until resolved)
• Uncontrolled diagnosable psychiatric conditions requiring treatment before donation, including any evidence of suicidality
• Uncontrollable hypertension or history of hypertension with evidence of end organ damage
• Diabetes

Relative Exclusion Criteria:

• History of substance abuse
• Medications causing kidney dysfunction
• Inability to be off work for at least 6-8 weeks
• Recent history of IV drug abuse
• History of cancer
• History of complex abdominal surgery
• History of kidney stones
• Body mass index (BMI) greater than 30
• History of heavy NSAID use
• History of coronary artery disease
