How to Become a Volunteer

Qualifications:

Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. Volunteers must complete an application form, interview with the volunteer director and department director/manager, complete drug test, agree to a background check, submit to a two-step TB skin test, and attend volunteer orientation. Volunteers under 18 years of age must have parental consent. Other age requirements may apply depending on interests and assignments. While qualifications vary according to the position, the following are essential in all volunteer assignments:


  1. Demonstrate strong inter-personal skills.
  2. Demonstrate ability to recognize boundaries between volunteers, patients, families, and staff.
  3. Demonstrate flexibility and the ability to adapt to the changing needs and conditions of patients and their families.
  4. Ability to accept responsibility, work independently and take initiative.
  5. Ability to remain calm under pressure.
  6. Ability to respect individual and family difference in style, temperament, culture, religion, beliefs.
  7. Ability to exhibit warmth, patience, tact, maturity and good judgment and have the ability to establish comfortable and appropriate relationships with subjects.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to interact with all age groups; able to relate with age appropriate responses

Commitment:

The minimum commitment is 4 hours per week for 3 months, on a regularly scheduled basis. You may choose the day of the week assuming your position is open that day.All assignments to volunteer positions can be terminated at any time, by either party, with or without notice and with or without cause. No volunteer assignments are guaranteed for any specific period of time.

Volunteer Assignments:

A variety of hospital assignments will be made available. A specific assignment will be determined based on the interest, availability, application status, personal interview and based on the most pressing need of the hospital at the time of acceptance. Typically, hospital assignments can be divided into three categories:

  1. Direct Care-Direct interaction with UMC patients and families
  2. In-Direct Care-Offer support to families and professional staff
  3. Career development-Receive direct observation of hospital professionals working in patient care areas

For Groups:

  • Handicrafts
  • Special events
  • Foundation Committees

Compensation:

Volunteer positions are not paid.
Volunteers do not carry employee status
Volunteering does not guarantee employment with the medical center
