UMC Provides Free Clinical Breast Exams

Breast cancer accounts for nearly one in three cancers diagnosed in women, according to the American Cancer Society. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, after skin cancer. By the end of 2013, an estimated 232,340 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and an estimated 39,620 women will die from breast cancer.

In honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, University Medical Center will provide Breast Cancer Screenings on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at 1000 Shadow Lane in Las Vegas. The screening is a clinical breast exam only and does not include a mammogram. Appointments are on a walk-in basis only.

A clinical breast exam is performed by a health care provider who manually checks the breasts and underarm areas for any lumps or changes that may be present. Women should have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years between the ages of 20 and 39 and every year starting at 40. The American Cancer Society recommends a mammogram annually beginning at age 40.

“In addition to clinical breast exams and mammograms, women should get to know their own bodies by performing a monthly breast self exam or what we call a BSE,” said Doris Cowell, UMC Oncology Program Coordinator. “This gives women an opportunity to inform their physicians of any breast changes throughout the year. However, doing a BSE alone does not take the place of having a clinical breast exam by a physician.”

A woman’s chances of surviving are better if the cancer is detected early, before it spreads to other parts of the body.

*Please note the screening is not being held inside the hospital. It is inside the UMC Cast Clinic located at 1000 Shadow Lane (Northwest corner of Shadow Lane and W. Charleston Blvd).*
