The University of Nevada School of Medicine general surgery residency training program includes several affiliated hospitals throughout Nevada. The program is designed to prepare resident physicians for an academic career or general surgery private practice.
A foundation for fellowship training in a surgical subspecialty is implicit in this program. The program is principally based in two hospitals, UMC and the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center in Reno.
The VAMC in Reno offers learning experiences in all types of surgery specialites except cardiac surgery.
UMC includes a free-standing trauma center, the fifth busiest in the U.S. UMC is the only designated Level I trauma center in southern Nevada and admits more than 2,000 acute trauma patients each year. UMC also includes the only designated regional burn center in Nevada and houses the surgery residency program’s transplantation activities. The hospital is an excellent setting to experience a broad-range of surgical cases.
