The University of Nevada School of Medicine General Surgery Residency Training Program is statewide and incorporates several affiliated hospitals. Our residency is designed to prepare residents for either an academic career or the private practice of general surgery. Preparation for advanced fellowship training in a subspecialty is implicit in our program. Our training program is principally based in two hospitals, University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Reno, but may well expand to other locations in Southern Nevada.
The VAMC provides exposure to all types of surgical patients, except cardiac surgery.
UMC is a large, county-owned hospital with a free-standing Trauma Center. UMC is the only designated Level I Trauma Center in Southern Nevada and admits more than 2000 acute trauma patients annually. This institution also contains the only designated regional Burn Center in Nevada and also houses our transplantation activities. We are enthusiastic about our future opportunities, which include the ability to expand to additional Southern Nevada Hospitals in the future.
