The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is focused in Las Vegas, where it was formally established in 1979. However, the tradition of training house officers goes back to the mid-1960s, when residency training affiliations were developed with Tulane University in New Orleans and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Currently, faculty supervision of residents is divided primarily among the full-time, part-time and volunteer clinical faculty. The program faculty is comprised of 67 physicians in the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology, including boarded diplomates and those with special competency in the following areas: gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, anesthesia, pediatrics, internal medicine, medical oncology, radiology, diagnostic imaging, therapeutic radiology, surgery, psychiatry and neurology, urology, pathology and cytology, genetics and geriatrics.
The county hospital-based program is organized according to criteria outlined in "Program Requirements for Residency Training in Obstetrics and Gynecology." The Program is accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and is affiliated with the University of Nevada School of Medicine. The combination of university faculty and the hospital's ob/gyn attending physician staff provides the benefit of the experiences of many board-certified clinicians. Ethics has been incorporated into the curriculum to teach students and residents the guidelines and thinking processes needed to make difficult decisions in the changing world of medicine. Formal courses, grand rounds and journal club discussions have been well received by residents and students.
The four-year, fully-accredited program provides a structured educational experience in reproductive health care and ambulatory primary health care for women, including health maintenance, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, consultation and referral. Throughout the four-year program, resident physicians undertake increasing responsibility for patient care under close faculty supervision.
