Hysterectomy

Description:
Surgical removal of the uterus, through the abdominal wall or the vagina, done to remove tumors or to treat hemorrhage, severe pelvic inflammatory disease, or a cancerous or precancerous condition.

In a total hysterectomy, the uterus and cervix are removed; in a radical hysterectomy or panhysterectomy, the ovaries, oviducts, uterus, cervix, and associated lymph nodes are removed.
