Description:
A virus that attacks certain cells of the body's immune system and causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Two virus types (HIV-1 and HIV-2) have been identified, though infection with HIV-2 in the United States is infrequent. Nonetheless, blood supplies are typically screened for both.
