Term:
Hemoglobin
Description:
Complex compound, containing the non-protein, iron-containing pigment heme and the protein globin, found in red blood cells (erthrocytes) that transport oxygen to cells throughout the body and carries carbon dioxide away from body cells.
In the high oxygen concentration of the lungs, hemoglobin binds with oxygen to form oxyhemoglobin.
In the tissues of the body, the oxygen is given off and the hemoglobin combines with carbon dioxide to form carboxyhemoglobin, which is carried back to the lungs. There the carbon dioxide is given off and more oxygen picked up for transport to the body cells.
Normal hemoglobin concentration in blood is 13.5-18 grams per deciliter for males, 12-16 grams per deciliter for females.
