Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
Description:
Degenerative disease of the central nervous system characterized by progressive muscle atrophy starting in the limbs and spreading to the rest of the body, often accompanied by hyperflexia (overactive reflexes). Also called Lou Gehrig's disease.
Symptoms:
Of unknown cause, it usually manifests itself after age 40, affecting more men than women, and progresses rapidly.
Treatment:
There is no known treatment (June 2001).
