> Canine Therapy
In 1988, UMC was the first hospital in Las Vegas to offer a canine therapy program. The program has grown immensely in popularity, especially with pediatric patients.
K-9 Therapists of Las Vegas is the local volunteer-based, non-profit organization which provides UMC with canine therapists. There are approximately 120 canine members in the organization.
Upon request, volunteers and their dogs visit patients in their rooms to ease the fears and stress of hospitalization. Canine therapy, though not intended to act as a substitute for traditional therapy, has been proven to relieve stress, reduce depression and lower blood pressure.
Canine therapy is free and offered to any patient requesting the service by contacting your charge nurse.
