2008 in Review

LAS VEGAS — UMC continues to be the leader in caring for our community. While we have had our share of challenging State and Medicaid budget cuts, our patients continue to be our number one priority, as we very proudly remain Nevada’s only Level I Trauma Center, the only free-standing Trauma Center west of the Mississippi, and the only Burn Care Center in the State of Nevada, providing skilled and expert care to the people who need it the most. Here’s a look back at some of the accomplishments at UMC in 2008.

• UMC earned the elite status of being a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center by the American College of Surgeons and the Committee on Trauma. UMC is the only hospital in Nevada to hold such a prestigious designation.
• UMC’s Trauma Center treated 9,420 patients, 2566 had life-threatening injuries. UMC is very proud to have a 98% success rate of patients who survive their injuries, recover and go on to live healthy lives.
• UMC signed an agreement with physicians from nationally-renowned University of Utah to enhance our kidney transplant program.
• UMC received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines –Coronary Artery Disease Gold Performance Achievement Award. The award recognizes UMC’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of cardiac care for patients hospitalized with coronary artery disease.
• UMC welcomed 4533 babies into the world. Of those, 36 sets were twins. 632 babies were cared for in our Level III NICU.
• UMC is the only Las Vegas hospital to be named one of the Best Places to Work by the Southern Nevada Human Resources Association.
• UMC has gone green. We recycle to save money and help out our planet through a partnership with Opportunity Village.
• UMC’s partnership with The University of Nevada School of Medicine Department of Surgery is the first program in the country to be approved for an acute care surgery fellowship.
• UMC and the University of Nevada School of Medicine have launched Project Hope, Healthy Options for Prevention and Education. The three-year-study researches ways to combat the effects of childhood obesity and encourage middle school students to eat right and get a lot of exercise.
