Medicine and Aviation Team up for Safety at UMC

Las Vegas, Nev. – With one eye squarely focused to the future, University Medical Center and Medical Management Resources LLC (MMR) are joining together to further enhance an already excellent patient safety record at the hospital.

“Nationally, professional medical groups are calling on medicine to look to high reliability organizations, industries with excellent safety records, for ways to improve their organizations,” says Captain Stephen Wilkinson, managing partner of MMR.

UMC’s clinical staff will learn leadership and communication skills similar to that of the aviation industry. MMR will lead the seminars modeled after the Crew Resource Management training course.

“As in the aviation industry, medicine relies on teamwork and communication for safety,” said Kathy Silver, interim CEO of UMC. “Patient safety is our priority and finding ways in which we can further enhance patient safety is very important to our organization.”

The airline industry has demonstrated safety success due to the leadership and communication skills learned through Crew Resource Management. This training stresses teamwork, two-way communication and how to appropriately manage the work-load.
