CYSTIC FIBROSIS CENTER COMING TO UMC

University Medical Center in association with Dr. Craig Nakamura will open a cystic fibrosis center located on the hospital campus effective April 15, a move that is intended to maintain the high level of care and support services local cystic fibrosis patients have become accustomed to.

UMC and Dr. Nakamura are collaborating in overseeing the new center, which will essentially replace the doctor’s Cystic Fibrosis Center of Nevada.

The move was prompted by concerns over the prior contractual relationship with Dr. Nakamura’s center and the desire to continue providing convenient and holistic care to those patients and their families.

“Patient care is always our top concern and with these changes, Clark County’s cystic fibrosis patients and their families will continue to get most of their care from one location,” UMC acting CEO Kathleen Silver said. “Maintaining the multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients will continue to receive critical support services and physician services in one location.”

UMC had been providing three support staff to the center. However, federal regulations do not allow such an arrangement and instead require that a hospital be paid fair market value for any such support.

Moving the support staff – a dietitian, social worker and patient care coordinator – from a private medical center to the hospital corrects this concern. The move also brings the patients closer to lab and radiology services.

UMC will now operate the center in conjunction with Dr. Nakamura, a pediatric pulmonologist.

“I want to thank UMC administration for working out a solution to allow patients to continue to receive the care that they need,” said Dr. Nakamura.

The new center will be at UMC’s Total Life Care Specialty Center at 2231 W. Charleston Blvd.
