Local volunteer receives Daily Point of Light Award for his work at UMC
UMC volunteer Joseph Mulloy has received a national award presented to individuals and volunteer groups that have made a commitment to help people meet critical needs in their communities. The Daily Point of Light Award focuses on the goals for children and youth set by the 1997 President’s Summit for America’s Future, held by President Clinton with support from past American presidents.
Joseph Mulloy has generously volunteered his time at UMC for more than four years performing a variety of functions. He serves as ambassador of courtesy greeting patients and visitors and helping them find their way through the hospital.
UMC officials say Mulloy personally delivers reading materials to patients and makes an effort to personalize his visits by remembering topics of interest for each patient. His dedication is such that he has even organized book drives among his friends and neighbors in order to have a greater variety of books and magazines to offer UMC patients.
“My job is to put a smile on someone’s face every day,” he said.
The participation of volunteers is critical to UMC to accomplish its community-based mission to provide health services for all people in Clark County, regardless of their financial circumstances. UMC has an established volunteer program where local residents, mostly retired seniors, donate their time.
“Volunteers like Mulloy give of themselves to help others and deserve the recognition for their work, passion and dedication,” said UMC Volunteer Services Director Suzanne Poisson. “UMC executives and staff are proud to congratulate Joseph Mulloy for this well-deserved award.”
