UMC Primary Care Centers to Provide Screenings for Prostate Cancer
To kick-off National Prostate Cancer Awareness Week, four University Medical Center (UMC) Primary Care Centers are providing men 50 and older discount screenings for prostate cancer. Men in high-risk groups, such as African American or those who have a family history of prostate cancer may choose to begin screening at a younger age.
UMC’s Summerlin, Craig, Spring Valley, and Boulder Primary Care Centers will provide preventative screenings that include a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test. Appointments are required. The PSA blood test and the DRE are important tools for detecting prostate cancer. When the disease is found early, there are effective treatment options to choose from.
About 180,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. About 40,000 men will die of the disease this year. The American Cancer Society recommends men age 50 talk with their health care provider about beginning annual PSA blood testing and digital rectal exams of the prostate gland.
Prostate cancer screenings will be held at the following UMC Primary Care Centers:
Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon Summerlin Primary Care 2031 N. Buffalo Drive 383-2650
Sept. 19 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Spring Valley Primary Care 4180 S. Rainbow Blvd., Suite 400 383-3626
Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to noon Craig Primary Care 2202 W. Craig Road 383-6280
Sept. 20 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Boulder Primary Care 5412 Boulder Highway 383-2406
