University Medical Center Selected to Represent Nevada
UMC Children’s Center 11:30 am -- Wednesday July 3, 2002
Las Vegas, Nevada - Combining the 4th of July holiday, “heroes” from the Clark County Fire Department, and hospitalized kids at UMC’s Children’s Center is a recipe for a great event, and heart-warming news story. Our local “heroes” will be giving red, white, and blue “Cat-in-the-Hat style” hats to children who won’t be able to celebrate America’s birthday in the traditional way.
The “heroes” from the Clark County Fire Department wanted to help our local children feel heroic by discovering that courage and bravery come from within. Hospitals in every state will be participating in this years program. Before the last “ohh’s” and “ahh’s”, more than 30,000 tall red, white, and blue felt hats will be given to patients in Children’s Hospitals nationwide.
Happy Hats for Kids is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring smiles and happiness to the lives of hospitalized children with cancer, AIDS, and other life-threatening diseases. Happy Hats for Kids was founded in 1991 by hat designer Sheri Schrier after the loss of three family members to cancer. She saw the physical and emotional trauma caused by hair loss from chemotherapy, as well as the unseen wounds, including loss of self-esteem, isolation, sadness, and fear. For the past 12 years, the Happy Hats Corporation has selected one hospital from each state to be part of the annual celebration, which is intended to alleviate the fears of hospitalized children across the country. # # #
