Is It Time To Have Your Thyroid Tested?
By: University Medical Center of Southern Nevada

A thyroid problem is not always obvious. We may blame weight gain, hair loss, constipation or aging - when in fact, the thyroid is to blame. The body's metabolic rate is affected by the thyroid gland and can affect body temperature, heart rate, muscle strength and mood. There are certain symptoms that should raise a red flag and prompt a discussion with your physician.

* An underactive gland can cause fatigue, weight gain, intolerance to cold, dry skin, hair loss, gradual personality change, depression, constipation, bloating or puffiness and loss of memory.

* An overactive gland can cause fatigue, as well as weight loss, intolerance to heat, sweating, shaking, nervousness, diarrhea, insomnia, eye irritation and changes in vision.

A simple test called TSH can confirm the activity of the thyroid gland. It is recommended that all older adults have their thyroid function checked every five years. Call your family doctor for more information.
