Intrinsic factor

Definition:
Intrinisic factor is a protein, produced by glands in the stomach lining, which is necessary for intestinal absorption of vitamin B12.

A deficiency in intrinsic factor can cause pernicious anemia. Such deficiencies can be caused by surgical removal of the stomach, inherited conditions, or other diseases.
