Fibroid tumors should be followed by frequent pelvic exams -- for example, every 6 months -- to check for changes in your fibroids. In many cases, treatment is not needed at all. Treatment is only considered if the fibroid is growing rapidly or if you have symptoms like:

• Excessive vaginal bleeding
• Pelvic pressure
• Abdominal enlargement
• Abdominal pain
• Pain with intercourse

Hormonal treatment, with drugs such as nafarelin and leuprolide (Lupron), may reduce the size of fibroids. However, side effects can include menopausal symptoms and the fibroids will regrow if hormone therapy is discontinued. Partial or complete hysterectomy is another treatment option.
