Ambassadors of Courtesy UMC’s Ambassadors of Courtesy help patients and visitors find their way around the hospital. In a large medical center such as UMC, this is especially important. Volunteers help people find a particular department, or assist people in determining the most appropriate department to handle their inquiry.
Office/Clerical Volunteers also provide clerical support for the numerous departments and nursing units at UMC. On nursing units, volunteers not only answer phones and assist with paperwork, but they also talk with patients. Volunteers in Marketing help prepare for health fairs while volunteers in the medical library help people find resources on a variety of health-related issues.
Home Crafts If you like to sew or make other crafts, UMC welcomes your handy work. Using your creativity, you can provide tray favors, sew layettes, quilts and receiving blankets for patients.
Medical Library Volunteers in the medical library assist visitors in locating material, help with re-shelving books, and assist with special projects. Like any other library, this is a quiet environment.
Surgery Family Waiting Room In the surgical waiting area, volunteers provide support to family members waiting on a loved one. Volunteers work with doctors and nurses to help family members understand the procedure and provide updates on the patient’s condition.
Baby Cuddlers Rock, cuddle, and comfort the babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
Volunteer Youth Group This eight (8) week, summer program gives teens between the ages of 14 and 17 an opportunity to give back to their community. Volunteer Youth Group members transport patients, provide clerical assistance, and gain valuable knowledge about the healthcare industry.
Medical Explorers Post 841 If you're 14 to 20 years old, and have wondered what all those people in hospitals actually do, UMC has an opportunity for you.
UMC's Medical Explores Post 841 is a career education program that allows job shadowing in several areas. Beginning in September and ending in May, program participants meet twice a month to discuss what they have learned and observed about careers in the medical field.
