The University of Nevada School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is based in Las Vegas, where it was established in 1979. However, the tradition of training house officers goes back to the mid-60s when residency training affiliations were formed with Tulane University and the University of Arkansas. Faculty supervision of resident physicians is divided among full-time, part-time and volunteer clinical faculty. The faculty currently includes 67 physicians who specialize in obstetrics and gynecology and includes boarded diplomates with expertise in gynecologic oncology, maternal fetal medicine, neonatology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, anesthesia, pediatrics, internal medicine, medical oncology, radiology, diagnostic imaging, therapeutic radiology, surgery, psychiatry and neurology, urology, pathology and cytology, and genetics and geriatrics.
University faculty and UMC’s OB/GYN attending staff offer the chance to work alongside many board-certified clinicians. Ethics is also part of the curriculum to help students and resident physicians make the difficult medical decisions that help their patients. Courses, grand rounds and journal club discussions also take place to foster discussion among students and resident physicians. This four-year and fully-accredited program provides a structured learning experience in reproductive health care and ambulatory primary care for women including health maintenance, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, consultation and referral. In the course of the four years resident physicians take increased individual responsibility for patient care under the close supervision of faculty physicians. The residency program, accredited by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, is structured according to criteria outlined in the “Program Requirements for Residency Training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.”
