What are Core Measures and why do we monitor performance?

In 2002 leaders of various health care organizations, with the support of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, announced that hospitals would be asked to voluntarily permit all patient quality data (not just Medicare patients) be shared with the public.  Congress endorsed the program in 2004.

Having this information will show you how well we perform in specific areas.  These measures make up a large percentage of the complex patient population treated at UMCSN.

Goals of Monitoring Performance
  • Improve patient care
  • Gain public trust and confidence in the care we give.
  • Provide tools for patients and families to be active partners in health care decision-making.

Performance Results:

Notes:

    1. There are many factors that determine health care outcomes that may not relate to hospital performance, but would influence the results presented, for example, severity of illness, age and other accompanying illnesses or conditions.  The data attempts to adjust for some of these factors, but it is not possible to do so perfectly.
    2. UMCSN is committed to the safety of our patients.  Our physicians continuously and carefully review hospital mortality reports and other clinical quality information.  They do so to learn where quality efforts are improving care and to pinpoint areas where we might improve further.
    3. Because UMCSN is the only designated Level 1 trauma center in Nevada, UMCSN accepts many patients who are critically ill or injured.
    4. Average charges for inpatient care can vary significantly depending on the length of stay and types of services provided.
